The distinction between terror and horror in Gothic fiction

An interesting discussion from David Punter on the difference between terror and horror, particularly in Gothic fiction. As we read our texts by Poe, Austen and Wilde it will be useful to keep this distinction in mind.

the difference between horror and terror is that horror is more associated with the physical effects of fear derived from looking at something scary or being startled, for example, jump scares. terror is the feeling of fear derived from the realization of being in a bad or grim situation. for example, hearing footsteps within your house…. while you live alone.
