i think that Marji is overwhelmed by the events happening in her life. Anoosh’s death news made her angry. Earlier in the novel, we see that Marji wants to become a prophet and that she has a very close relationship with God as he visits her every night. For her, Anoosh was a hero and she really loved and cared about him. When he was announced dead, her feelings changed completely and she was over-driven by anger.

Towards the beginning, God was Marji’s best imaginary friend. God was always with her. However, there is this dramatic change of behavior towards God that occurs in this panel.

A few panels before the one here, a caption (reprsenting Marji’s thoughts) says: “That was my last meeting with my beloved Anoosh”. Although Marji didn’t know Anoosh for a very long time, he was a hero for her, which is not only suggested through that, but also directly told through:”And I had a hero in my family… Naturally I loved him immediately”. Also, Marji at this point in the novel starts to grow up a bit, and also, she is disturbed by other factors, such as some of her friends leaving for the United States, hearing about the deaths of Mohsen and Siamak’s sister, which obviouly is disturbing, especially at her age.

With all those factors, Marji became extremely disturbed, and was confused about what is hapenning to her life. Due to that, she removed God from her mind, and became independant from him. The way Marji talks to God, represents her growing up, in my opinion.

I believe the reason why marji acted in such a way to god is because she is angry. very angry, at how unfair the world is and at how god who was supposed to be this all powerful, active being in her life couldn’t save her beloved uncle. but this also shows the audience how marji is growing up since she was finally exposed to how unfair and cruel the world really is.

In my opinion Marji’s relationship with God has changed as she’s growing up, so it’s like almost like when kids have ‘imaginary friends’ she had God and when kids grow up they start forgetting about their imaginary friends, so Marji talking to God is a symbol for her childhood and she’s growing up so she starts to ignoring him until she literally sends him away.
