Torvald Sympathy Scale

From the scale of 10, I think my sympathy towards Torvald is confusing making me in the middle being a 3. Torvald is not consistent in his behavior towards Nora making it very difficult to interpret his true self. According, to the Victorian expectations of showing vast amount of pride, protectiveness and superior over women, Torvald very much fulfills this as in Act (2.113) Torvald as he says “Do you suppose I am going to make myself ridiculous before my whole staff, to let people think that I am a man to be swayed by all sorts of outside influence?” referring to his wife as he is afraid to seem weak in public by listening to his wife. On the other hand, Nora encourages it by saying things like “Your squirrel would run about and do all her tricks if you would be nice, and do what she wants” (2.92). Therefore, It is very difficult to sympathize with Torvald completely or the other way around.

Death Of Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe is an interesting life to look at when studying Gothic Literature. He was born on the 19th of January in 1809 in Boston. After being separated from his siblings due to the death of his mother at the age of 2, Edgar Poe was forced into a foster home and moved around, studying in different schools around the world until dropping out of university because of the amount of debts he had.

The rest of his life he had financial struggles never making a lot of money from his novels and short stories, yet still had a great influence on the genre horror with the first ever detective story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, published in Graham’s Magazine in 1840’s. However his death (in my opinion) was one of the more interesting aspects of his life.

In September 1849, Poe left New York and stayed in Philadelphia for a couple days and it would seem that on his way back to New York, stepped on the wrong train to Baltimore where On October the 3rd he was found and died in the hospital on October the 7th. Between the 3rd and 7th of October Edgar Poe often fell in and out of consciousness but the cause of this was never found, which to me is a detective story in itself. Even after his dead, no one is certain of what exactly happened the days he was gone and what ultimately caused his death. Many believe that alcohol played a main role because he had previously been known to have alcoholic problems and even joined “The Sons of Temperance” as an attempt to stop these problems earlier that year. One of his friends even spoke openly about this issue as the cause of Poe’s death to warn people about the consequences of alcohol.

Edgar Allan Poe’s Death

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States on January 19, 1809. Throughout his life, he has had a major influence on the development of the horror genre. 40 years later, Edgar Allan Poe died a mysterious death. Even a century after his death his legacy continues as he still makes appearances on television shows like The Following and South Park.

There are many facts about the circumstances surrounding his demise. He died when he was on his way to Philadelphia for an editing job even though he was advised to not travel by a doctor a week before his death. He had died while he was drunk. His friend, Snodgrass wrote and talked about Poe’s death as a cautionary tale about the evils of alcohol.

His body was only moved decades after his death where he was buried in an unmarked grave. A cousin paid for a monument but it had been destroyed by a train. Several years later, teachers and students raised money for a proper monument. The coffin broke while it was being moved again revealing Poe’s remains which are now collector’s items.

Poe’s wife had been buried next to him nearly 40years after her death. Supposedly, Poe’s death did not stop him from writing as in the 1860’s Lizzie Doten had published some poetry claimed to be dictated by Poe’s spirit. Later on, his fiancee moved in with her as she though Poe’s ghost wanted to communicate with her as well.
